Meet and confer

A required good-faith conference between parties before bringing certain motions, especially discovery disputes.

"Meet and confer" is the requirement that parties make a good-faith effort to resolve a dispute among themselves before asking the court to intervene. It is most common in discovery: many courts and the Federal Rules require a certification that the movant conferred (or attempted to confer) before filing a motion to compel.

The conference should be documented — date, participants, issues discussed, and what was resolved — because the certification is part of the motion and a court will scrutinize whether the effort was genuine.
