Alternative: CoCounsel

CoCounsel alternative for solo attorneys: research tool or drafting workspace?

If your work depends on legal research with a citator, CoCounsel on a research plan is the stronger tool and there is no like-for-like cheap substitute. If most of your day is drafting and answering questions from the documents in your own matters, a drafting workspace such as Draftiro may cover it at a lower published price. Draftiro has no case-law database and does not verify citations. Attorney review applies either way.

Start with what you actually need

"AI for lawyers" covers two different jobs, and most of the confusion in comparisons comes from mixing them:

  • Research: finding and validating authority. This needs a database of case law and statutes and a citator that tells you whether a case is still good law.
  • Record work: reading your matter's own documents, answering questions about them and drafting from them. This needs your files, not a research database.

CoCounsel's research plans are built around the first. Draftiro is built only for the second. A solo who does both may want a research tool and a drafting tool, or one research product with drafting features. The right answer depends on your mix of work, not on a ranking.

What CoCounsel offers, and what it costs

CoCounsel is Thomson Reuters' AI assistant for drafting, document review, comparison and summarization, with legal research on its research plans. When we checked Thomson Reuters' plan page on October 28, 2026, it listed CoCounsel Essentials "starting at $340.85/month", Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set with CoCounsel Essentials from $882.30/month, and CoCounsel Legal from $1,694.90/month. The page did not say whether those figures are per user or what the contract term is. Essentials offered online purchase and a free trial. Confirm current prices and terms with Thomson Reuters before deciding.

Where CoCounsel is stronger

  • Research and citator depth from Thomson Reuters on its research plans. Draftiro has no case-law database.
  • Checking authority. Draftiro does not verify citations: each case, statute or rule it detects is flagged as not checked, with a look-up link, and you verify it.
  • Review at scale across large document sets, plus Practical Law content on one plan.

Where Draftiro fits for a solo

  • Your own record first. Upload a matter's PDFs, Word and text files, ask about them and open the exact passages behind each sourced answer. See answers from your case files.
  • Drafting from the file. Letters, motion sections, discovery requests and summaries drafted from the matter's documents, each draft listing the sources it used, with export to Word (.docx). See discovery requests.
  • A matter workspace. Matters, folders, a conflict check against your existing matters when you open a new one, and draft AI-assisted time entries for your review.
  • Published pricing. Starter is $29 a month and Solo is $99 a month after a 14-day trial with no card; see pricing.

Three honest setups

  1. Research-heavy practice (appellate, complex motions): a research product with a citator is the core tool. Add a drafting workspace only if record work is a bottleneck.
  2. Record-heavy practice (family law, personal injury, small-business disputes): most hours go into reading productions, medical records and correspondence and drafting from them. A drafting workspace plus careful manual research in free and bar-provided sources may be enough. Many state bars offer members a research service; check yours.
  3. Mixed: run both on one live matter for two weeks and keep what you actually opened every day.

Whichever you choose

No AI product removes the duty to read the authorities you cite. Rule 11(b) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure certifies that legal contentions are warranted by existing law or by a nonfrivolous argument for extending, modifying, or reversing existing law, and ABA Formal Opinion 512 applies the duties of competence and supervision to AI output. The citation validation entry explains what checking a citation involves, and citation validation 101 walks through it.

What Draftiro does not do

  • Draftiro has no case-law or statute database and is not a research tool.
  • It does not verify citations or tell you whether a case is still good law. Each citation is flagged for you to verify before filing.
  • It does not import from or integrate with Thomson Reuters products.
  • Each answer draws on the passages retrieved for that question, not every page of every file.
  • It is not legal advice. Attorney review is required for every answer and draft.

Common questions

Is Draftiro a cheaper CoCounsel?

Not for research. Draftiro has no research database or citator. It is a lower-cost option for drafting and answering questions from your own matter documents.

Can I use both?

Yes. A common split is a research product for authority and Draftiro for drafting from the record. Draftiro does not connect to Thomson Reuters products, so you move documents yourself.

What did CoCounsel cost when you checked?

On October 28, 2026, Thomson Reuters listed CoCounsel Essentials starting at $340.85/month and CoCounsel Legal from $1,694.90/month. Confirm current pricing and terms with Thomson Reuters.

Can I try Draftiro without a card?

Yes. The 14-day trial needs no card. After it ends the account is read-only unless you subscribe.

Read the governing text yourself. Rules change, and local rules and standing orders can add requirements.

Try the record side first

Start a 14-day trial with no card, upload one matter and see whether drafting from your own files covers the work you were going to buy a larger tool for.
