Voir dire
The jury-selection questioning of prospective jurors to identify bias.
Voir dire is the process of questioning prospective jurors before trial to determine whether any should be excused for cause (actual bias or a disqualifying relationship) or by peremptory challenge. The term also refers to preliminary questioning of a witness to establish competence or the admissibility of evidence.
Peremptory challenges may not be used to strike jurors on the basis of race or sex (Batson v. Kentucky).
