Rule 1.1 of the ABA Model Rules requires lawyers to provide competent representation, which includes the legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness, and preparation reasonably necessary for the representation. Comment 8 extends the duty to "the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology."
For AI tools, that means understanding what the tool does, when it fails, and how to verify its output.
